The CCI
Closely followed from the halls of the Fed to the canyons of Wall Street, the Consumer Comfort Index™ tracks the public’s economic attitudes on a weekly basis, providing an early, accurate and ongoing read on consumer sentiment since 1985. Mark Zandi, chief economist of economy.com, has called it one of his “five favorite economic indicators.”
Langer Research Associates produces the weekly index under an exclusive licensing and distribution agreement with Bloomberg Finance LP. Released each Thursday at 9:45 a.m., results of the Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index are available to Bloomberg terminal users at COMF < GO >, with news and data summaries subsequently posted by Bloomberg News.

The index has measured Americans' views of the national economy, their personal finances and the buying climate continuously for more than 25 years via representative, random-sample telephone interviews conducted by SSRS/Social Science Research Solutions of Media, Pa. Consumer expectations are tracked separately on monthly basis.
Our analyses have shown significant long-term correlations, including on a time-lagged basis, between the index and a variety of key economic indicators. Julie E. Phelan and Gary Langer presented a paper on the concurrent and predictive validity of the index at the 2011 national conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, extending a 2003 paper by Daniel M. Merkle, Langer and Dalia Sussman documenting the CCI's relationship with other, less frequent consumer sentiment indices as well as its association with other indicators.
A further paper by Phelan and Langer, presented at the national AAPOR conference in May 2013, reported on the extensive evaluation that preceded our improvement of CCI sampling procedures to include cell phone and Spanish-language interviews, a shift that took effect as of July 2012.
